POEM : SAVE ME PEOPLE!

A LETTER FOR PEOPLE

(by: Riris Harwiyati)

Dear People,

I just want to remind you

Something that may be you forget

When I was strong

What I have done for you

What I have given to you

And how difficult I did it

Do you know, you have changed?

You forget about me

Never care with me anymore

You are not the same

Your arrogance is gonna kill me

So I hope you can change

After hearing what I want to say

People, don’t you remember?

By using my strong land, I used to keep you from landslide

By using fruit and the other things that appear from my body, I used to save you from hunger

By using my trees, I used to keep you from warm

By using the roots in my land, I used to save you from blood

By using the lakes on my body, I used to keep you from dryness

By using the green leaves on my trees, I used to give you fresh air to breath

By using all of me, I used to make you survive to life.

I used to save you from anything that can make you extinct, people

And now look what you have done to me!

You change my trees with buildings

Fulfill my lakes with your rubbish

Hoe my mountains to be your roads

You neglect your promise, your duty to keep me

To save me from destruction

As what I did to you

Who do you think I am, people?

A strong earth that you can exploit as you want?

A rich thing that can give you everything?

No people, I am not the same anymore

I am old

I am fragile

I am weak, people

I can’t always help you if like this

So please give me your hands

Hug me tight

Give me your affection

Heal me

Oh people, please save me

From everything that can destroy me

That can destroy you too

                                                                                                                                                                Love,

Fragile Earth

WRITING 3: THE 8 TASK

Hello world!! Do you miss me? Glad to write a text again! Ehm, anyway I have got a task to make an exposition text. I have three choices of theme. Guess what? I choose the second option of theme (did I tell you the option? "no, you do not." oh my God, I missed it. Well, just forget it!:D). That is "why teens smoke cigarettes?". Why did I choose this theme? Because I feel apprehensive with the teens nowadays. They smoke cigarettes freely without any fear and worry. Moreover, I dislike person who smoke cigarettes. But actually not the person, but rather the "thing" that make me hate the person. Yeah, I will share what I thought about it with you through this essay. Hope you can read it carefully so that you can take the benefit of reading this essay in order to open your mind, what I mean is make you be "open-minded" person. Hehe

Why Teens Smoke Cigarette?

What make teens smoke cigarettes? When we are talking about smoking, it is hard to deny that smoking is near with teens’ life nowadays. Smoking is like a lifestyle for them. A lot of teens smoke cigarettes freely almost everywhere. No matter they are allowed to smoke or not, they will smoke. No wonder if smoking extremely spreads wide in the youth society. The reasons why teens smoke cigarettes will be explained in this essay clearly.
According to Advance English Dictionary, smoking is “inhale and exhale smoke from cigarettes, cigars, and pipes” and “the act of smoking tobacco or other substances”. Smoking is done by people, especially teens nowadays. Here are some reasons why teens smoke cigarettes.
The first is curiosity. One of the things that will be felt by the teens is feeling curious. This curiosity force them to try everything, include to smoke cigarettes.  The curiosity is felt when teens see the new thing or something that the others do but they do not do. In this case, teens feel curious with smoking not by accident. Teens can find man who smokes every day and everywhere, in the morning, noon, evening and in the home, supermarket, park even in the school.  When all man that they find is a smoker and they are not, they will interest to smoke cigarette too.
The second is smoker “look like” success person. Yeah, this statement appears because the advertisement show like that. People who smoke are rich, optimist, creative, and success in the advertisement. Teens watch the advertisement every day. Then they are impressed by that. Finally, teens start to smoke cigarettes.

The third is near with beautiful girls. It is can be seen from the advertisement too. Most of the advertisement take beautiful lady as the figure that always accompany the success man. Teens nowadays ids flattered if they have beautiful girl beside them. Then they are hypnotized to smoke cigarettes to get beautiful girl.
The fourth is person who do not smoke cigarettes will be judge as “unsocial” person. How could it be?  Actually I do not understand why and what is the relation between smoke or do not smoke and be social or unsocial person. But the fact has explained like that. So teens who do not want to be called as unsocial people should be a smoker.
The fifth is the cheap cigarettes. The cost of cigarette is cheap enough, and it is easy to be bought by the teens who usually have not have a job and do not have a lot of money in their pocket. So, teens can easily consume cigarettes, I mean smoke cigarettes.
The sixth is feeling great. Most of teens (boys and girls) think that smoking can make them become great and cool people. They do not care with the effect of smoking cigarettes as long as the other people see them as the great and cool people.
The seventh is environment factor. Environment is place to learn something new for the teens. If teens live in smoker environment, so automatically they will smoke as what they learn from their environment.
The eighth is not knowing the effect of smoking of cigarettes. If teens know and understand what are the effect of smoking cigarettes such as cancer, impotent, heart attack, and the other illnesses, surely they will not smoke cigarettes at all. Their unknowing lets them to smoke cigarettes.
From the explanation above we can take the conclusion that there are many reasons why teens smoke cigarettes. Cigarette do not only attack the "have" people but also the "poor" one. It spread in all level, no exception, and teens is included of the victim of smoking cigarettes.

WRITING 3: TASK 6

Hello everybody, in this posting, I present you a narrative text under the topic “The Hardest Thing I Have To Do”. Why did I choose that topic? If you ask me, I will answer, “Because I have story about that. And sometime it still be the hardest thing I have to do ‘til now.” And here goes the story …

Wake Up in the 3/4 of Night

 One morning…

“Riris, wake up! It has been so bright day!” my mum’s voice was so thundering passed my ears, woke me up from my inconceivable dream. I rubbed my eyes with my hands, tried to reassemble my soul to my body, then checked my clock, it was 5.30 a.m. and “Ha?!” I got myself in panicky. I was over sleep! I jumped out from my bed, and went out from my bedroom as fast as possible. I was late for praying shubuh. Mashaa Allah, it was horrible morning. It would not happen anymore. I would set three alarms for helping me to not over sleep tomorrow.

The next morning …

“teeeet….teeeet….teeeet” my alarm rang at 4:30 a.m. for the first alert. I denied it. I woke up only for make it off, then went sleeping again. The second alert rang at 4.45 a.m. I missed it. The third one rang 15 minutes after the second one, and dismissed. Finally, “Ris, wake up!” my mum’s voice shocked me. I looked at the clock directly, it was 5.29 a.m. oh my God! I was over sleep again. I thought maybe because this was the first day I set the alarm, so it did not work well. Then, I decided to set three alarms for tomorrow, and for the next tomorrow. But, the results were the same, I was still over sleep. I thought hard to fix this problem. But I did not find the way out of my problem, and I began to surrender.

Until one day…

I looked at my daddy’s cupboard. There were a lot of books inside. Then my eyes stopped when I looked at a book entitled The Mystery of Shubuh Praying. I was so interested with that book. I took it, then read it page by page. And I found so powerful words, “Two rakaats of dawn is better than the world and all the things inside and outside it.” That words was success pushed my bottom up to make me had a willing to wake up in the dawn, ¾ of night. I wrote those words on big paper then stuck it on the wall. I did not forget to set three alarms for tomorrow, but I made it earlier, 3.30 a.m., 3.45 a.m., and 4 a.m. I prayed to Allah to wake me up when dawn.

The next morning…

“Teeeeeeet…… teeeeeeeet…. teeeeeeet” my first and second alarms was denied by me. I just woke up for turning them off, then continued my sleeping. “teeeeeeeet… teeeeeeet… teeeeeet…” my third alarm rang for the first session, I still could deny it. The second one rang at 4.15 a.m. When I looked at the time, I suddenly remembered about the praying in ¾ of night. I tried to open my eyes widely then read the paper that I stuck on my wall. Finally, I could wake up in ¾ of night, pray in dawn and even pray shubuh in time.

Very well, that was my story. I hope you can take the lesson of my story above.  Enjoy reading! ^^

Note: do not forget to leave your comment about my story anyway. J

WRITING 3: TASK 5

Description of NARRATIVE writing

Narrative writing is a text focusing some specific participants that have several structural features making different from other genres. Narrative text is writing in which a story is told; the details may be fictional or based on fact. Typically, the events described in narrative text are written sequentially. The primary purpose of narrative writing is to entertain. Novels depict numerous episodes of action. Short stories may only contain a few or even one episode. Nevertheless, both relate a causal chain of events: each event in the story leads to another, as the protagonist, or main character, tries to reach a goal or solve a problem. Elements that are basic to narrative text include: setting, characters, plot, conflict, and theme. Some literary experts label these elements "story grammar." That is, just as sentence grammar is used to explain and specify how sentences are constructed, story grammar delineates the basic parts of a story and how those work together to create a well constructed tale (Vacca and Vacca, 1993).

How Narrative Writing Differs

What is the difference between narrative and descriptive writing?
·         Narrative writing doesn't emphasize adjectives to give the physical details of characters, setting or events in the story.
·         Unlike descriptive writing, narrative writing uses the first person to relay the author's opinions, values and memories; it is more general, while the content of a descriptive piece focuses on one event, object or place. Sometimes, the author will use the narrative writing style to speak about the past or the future in general terms. The tone is casual and conversational.

What is the difference between Narrative and Recount?

·         Recount is chronological and describes events as they took place in the past
·         Narrative is an art of storytelling that can make the story more interesting and exciting than it is.
·         Narrative gives an account of crises inside the story and a way to solve them.
·         There is a basic difference in the structures of narratives and recounts.

What is the difference between Expository and Narrative?

Narrative is a style of writing that can be called story telling while expository is descriptive in nature.
Expository is factual and contains a lot of details in the form of facts whereas narrative contains figures of speeches and is a lot more flowing than expository.
The content is organized in expository while it can be without chronology in narrative style of writing.
Narrative can be both fact and fiction whereas expository is mostly factual.
Expository is used by authors mostly in text books whereas narrative style is used by authors writing novels and short stories.

How the way to write narrative text?

To write narrative text, you should know the framework of the narrative text itself.

Here are the framework of Narrative:

1.      Orientation
Sets the scene: where and when the story happened, introduces the participants of the story: who and what is involved in the story.

Eg. Once upon a time, there lived as neighbours, a bear and a rabbit. The rabbit is a good shot. In contrary, the bear is always clumsy ad could not use the arrow to good advantage.
2.      Complication
Tells the beginning of the problem which leads to the crisis (climax) of the main participants.
Eg. One day, the bear called over the rabbit and asked the rabbit to take his bow and arrows and came with bear to the other side of the hill. The rabbit was fearing to arouse the bear's anger so he could not refuse it. He consented and went with the bear and shot enough buffalo to satisfy the hungry family. Indeed he shot and killed so many that there was lots of meat left after the bear and his family had loaded themselves and packed all they could carry home.
The bear was very gluttonous and did not want the rabbit to get any of the meat. Th e rabbit could not even taste the blood from the butchering as the bear would throw earth on the blood and dry it up. The poor rabbit would have to go home hungry after his hard day's work.
3.      Resolution
The problem (the crisis) is resolved, either in a happy ending or in sad (tragic) ending.
Eg. The bear was the father of five children. The youngest child was very kind to the rabbit. He was very hearty eater. The mother bear always gave him an extra large piece of meat but the youngest child did not eat it. He would take it outside with him and pretended to play ball with the meat. He kicked toward the rabbit's house and when he got close to the door he would give the meat with such a great kick. The meat would fly into the rabbit's house. In this way, the poor rabbit would get his meal unknown to the papa bear.
4.      Re-orientation
This is a closing remark to the story and it is optional. It consists of a moral message/lesson, advice or teaching from the writer.

SHOWING THE TOPIC SENTENCES OF THE STORY

The Best Student of the Month!

This story was one of my good stories that I have when I got the predicate as the best student of the month in IDeA Indonesia. This story happened last August, before facing Ramadhan month. The best student? I did not even understand why I got this special predicate. I thought I was not excellent, but I belief I was different. I just did what I supposed to do. They called me Iris, the western name of my real name, Riris.

It was a pretty hot day, the sun shone so brightly without covered by any cloud. I was sitting while thinking of my assignment that given by my lovely instructor, brother Andy, a person who said, “If you do not do this assignment, you are not my students, guys!” All of my friend decided to do not did this assignment because actually we were free but we still have a class and we had many assignments from our campus. There was no time to do that assignment. But what did I do was success made them said, “Yeah, just do it, Iris. You are a good student, right!” Rebecca, Rose, Angelica, and Pauline judged me as the diligent person, but in the wrong way. Extraordinary, freak, queer, or whatever.

One day, as usual, I and friends prayed in the hall together with all people in the dormitory. We chose the back row for making us easy to run away after praying together because there was speech and we had to listen it whereas we had something important to do, assignment. “Come on, pray then go!”, the words that always be breathed by their lips. They went back to our room, but I, I stuck in that place until the end. I did not why I did not do like they did, I just felt uneasy to the people inside the hall. But in several conditions, I followed them.

Today was not like usual, in the evening class, my lovely instructor, brother Bastian looked so happy when he told me and friends about something but actually I did not get it at all. “I have a special news for my special students. One of you will make me proud! Just wait the announcement, I have tried my best to make it true.” Hearing word “Special”, I suddenly remembered about my other instructor words, brother Ahmad, he said “Keep in good way, ris. You are a special student. Trust me.” That words was success made me bloomy.

Started from several months ago, I was always be the best and the most active student in the class. Almost all events that held by dormitory I followed, but they did not. I always got the highest score in every test, so my friends always relied on me when we had an assignment or test, it made me almost always be the last person who left the class room with the instructor. I seldom left the class, and seldom broke the regulations.

Until someday, when I broke the regulations, I did not do the assignment, almost never attended the class and I got punishment. Brother Bastian felt so disappointed of me, someone who usually always give his sweet smile. I was so shy with him, with everyone who trust me, even with myself. Feeling bad all the day and thinking the way out to make him smile again. It was totally rushed my mind. “Sorry, I did not mean to do that!” then brother Andy gave addition suffer by saying “You guys cannot go somewhere in the night to buy some food or do your assignments outside” and made me more be a naughty girl and almost hated him. But alright, I could not be like this. I had to change. I followed the regulation properly. Doing all assignments, no breaking the regulations, giving my best speech, following in almost every events, being the member of IMUN, all I did to get them trust back.

Finally, two days after brother Bastian announced me and friend about the special news, the true news were announced. When maghrib praying was done, Mr. Eko, the head of IDeA Indonesia announced about the best student of the month. All the members listened to his words, full attention. Last month who got the reward was Hadi, the senior high school students, the clever and diligent one. Everyone thought that he would get the reward again this month, but what did Mr. Eko said, Me? I was the best student of this month! “Keep studying hard, being good student, and giving your best speech. Congratulation!”

I just realized that always doing the different thing with the others will created something special. No matter how loud the others screamed that I pretended to be a diligent or smart, or said I was queer or something like that. One that I knew, BEING DIFFERENT MAKES ME SPECIAL.

Topic Sentence of the narrative story of mine is “This story was one of my good stories that I have when I got the predicate as the best student of the month in IDeA Indonesia.” Because that sentence is the main of the story, the handler and the head of the story. That sentence is the soul and the spirit of the story which build the story properly. All sentences after that sentence are the supporting sentences of the topic. They explain the whole events that make the topic happens.
