In
the last explanation, we learned about some genres of paragraph. Now we are
going to learn about adequate and inadequate unity and coherence in writing. Do
you think that they have correlation in writing? If you think so, you are
totally right. Coherence and adequate-inadequate unity are the criteria of
making a good paragraph. We will find out what are they, and the way how to write
in that way.
First,
unity means that a paragraph discusses one and only one main idea from the
beginning to the ending (Oshima and Hogue, 2006 in Smart and Skillful Writer by
Dedi Turmudi page 2). To make your paragraph is in adequate unity, you must develop
your main idea into specific topic called topic sentence. Topic sentence itself
has two parts: a topic and a controlling idea. A good paragraph must have a
topic sentences, details or supporting sentences and concluding sentence.
Second,
coherence in the paragraph or text is solid. In Latin, coherence is taken from
word cohere means “hold together”
(Oshima and Hogue, 2006 in Smart and Skillful Writer by Dedi Turmudi page 2).
All of the sentences in one paragraph have to be hold together with appropriate
transitions. Let’s make an example. If our topic is about how to make a paper,
then we must make the contents of our supporting sentences are about the
process of the way how to make a paper.
So,
we can get the conclusion that adequate unity and coherence mean that a
paragraph has one main idea and all the supporting sentences and detail are
hold together with appropriate transitions.
Now you know what adequate unity and coherence in writing are and the way how to make it. Happy writing! Enjoy your learning!
