In this lesson, we are going to know one of genres of
writing paragraph or text. That is Narrative. It is very important for us to
understand about it because we can find narrative in your book, your village,
etc. Knowing that, it will very queer if we do not know about narrative. So,
here is the explanation of narrative!
Do you know what narrative is? Narrative is a text which
tells about something that happened in the past. It can be a story about
legends, fables, fairytales, myths, science fiction and soon.
What is its purposes? Its purposes are to amuse or entertain
the reader with a story that deals with complication or problematic events
which lead to a crisis and in turn finds a resolution.
Have you known what are the framework of Narrative? Here are
the framework of Narrative:
1.
Orientation
Sets the scene: where and when the story happened, introduces the
participants of the story: who and what is involved in the story.
2.
Complication
Tells the beginning of the problem which leads to the crisis (climax) of
the main participants.
3.
Resolution
The problem (the crisis) is resolved, either in a happy ending or in sad
(tragic) ending.
4.
Re-orientation
This is a closing remark to the story and it is optional. It consists of
a moral message/lesson, advice or teaching from the writer.
The language features of Narrative are:
a.
Focus on specific and individualized
participants.
b.
Using material process (action verb): arrived,
ate, went, etc.
c.
Using some behavioral and verbal processes
(saying verb): asked, said, told, etc.
d.
Using temporal conjunction and circumstances:
then, one day, when, a long, etc.
e.
Using nouns: tree, road, mouse, etc.
f.
Using pronouns: they, their, its, it, etc.
g.
Using simple past tense.
The example of narrative are Malin Kundang, Toba lake, The Rabbit and The Mouse, The Three Lions, etc.
